RAF Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a combined operation targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syria used by the Islamic State group (IS), as stated by the UK's MoD.

The site, located using intelligence, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was situated in mountains just above Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a several approach shafts down to the depot... initial indications indicate the strike was effective," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the attack conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft returned safely, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - also known as the so-called Islamic State - imposed militant control over significant areas in Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This action demonstrates our UK leadership, and determination to operate in unison with our partners, to eliminate any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary John Healey said.

RAF aircraft have performed overwatch operations over Syria to "deter any attempted resurgence" of the group subsequent to its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to every member of the UK armed forces participating in this operation for their skill and their valour," the Defence Secretary said. "They were part of numerous British personnel stationed over the festive period. This action, to take out terrorist threats who threaten our security, demonstrates how UK forces are prepared to act, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure at home and influential overseas."

Last December, the American forces conducted what it described as a "large-scale strike" on Islamic State objectives in Syria, after an attack killed two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN says IS still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in both countries.
