Tetris Couldn't Win at The Game Awards — Another Award Type Could Fix That

Each time a major honors show approaches, one notices a clamor for introducing of new categories to acknowledge unsung work and satisfy the hearts of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.

A fellow writer made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, this being someone's personal cause. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case backing this proposal remains most pressing and significant. This is the request: We need an award type for logic-based games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Categorizing art by genre defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and inevitably generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains a necessary evil for the industry of gaming, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.

Current Gaming Award Categories

The major gaming awards offer these classifications covering Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these six categories actually cover numerous genres, making space possible for most games within them.

Not so for logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges from a specific release, intense tile-matching from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. Which classification works within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.

Acknowledgment Issues

Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games released every year without proper recognition at major award shows, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.

  • One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated for anything that year
  • Another creative title was excluded in 2019
  • Well-received sorting experience got ignored in 2021
  • Limited numbers of puzzle games scraped into small studio or handheld classifications

Importance of Logic Titles

These are often small games, yet the craft of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles stand as the most-played games in the world and have been for many years.

The iconic tile-matching title competes with famous sandbox experiences claiming status as most purchased experience; it additionally competes as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.

Proposal and Rationale

Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. One could readily select multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.

Restating the point, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers are working at the hard edge game development, developing some of most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
