Meteorological devices containing a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for several hours when dozens of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.
Air Travel Interruptions
The operational halt led to thirty canceled flights affecting six thousand travelers, with authorities cautioning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices sent during the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and near the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to customs agents.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which illegal goods were transported from its border nation utilizing the balloons.
Criminal Methodology
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a method that is highly susceptible to weather factors rather than more controllable drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and participants so that this activity become economically unsustainable and present no risk to civil aviation."
Regional Security Context
Such border infiltrations occur during an era marked by increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Recent incidents in nearby states have caused EU officials to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
